-Eggplant & Poppy

I am so excited to share with you all the fun & spunky, Australian based company: Eggplant & Poppy.

Today I am interviewing Kirsty and Emma who are sharing with you all how they got rid of the “Monday Blues” by turning their hobby business into a full-time job.

Kirsty and Emma want you to come into their shop feeling like you are in an old friend’s home.

You know that feeling of comfort you get where you can help yourself to their fridge & lay down on their couch? That’s what they strive hard to give each and every one of their customers.

Eggplant & Poppy is a happy & fun brand where every day is a happy one and the wonderful owners focus on not taking life too seriously.
“I mean come on, we’re dealing in giftware, not body organs.”- Kirsty

They describe how working with their best friend every day is their favorite part of this business. Kirst and Emma have found their friendship is even stronger and have greater respect for each other – as women, mothers & business owners.

After interviewing them I found myself carrying a big smile on my face. Their personalities are infectious and their positivity is inspiring.

(PD)  What inspired you to launch Eggplant & Poppy?
(K&E) Truth known…..a few too many drinks & a girls night out. A great journey starts with ideas made under the influence of a couple of beverages and E&P was no exception. Our merge occurred after helping each other with our own growing “hobby businesses” and realizing we both had the same work ethics, goals, direction and most importantly: a sense of humor. Our main goal was to successfully return to work without family life suffering. We wanted the flexibility of an enjoyable and challenging working environment that still allows for “Mum” duty.

(PD) What is your daily motivation to continue your hustle?
(K&E) Creating a business & job that we adore!! We don’t have “Monday Morning Blues” because its not a chore coming to work.

(PD)  What is the biggest hardship you have faced since you launched Eggplant & Poppy?
(K&E) Remembering to pick up our kids from school…But really, starting up with a mere $500 contribution each and growing a business based purely on the cash flow. We knew what products we wanted to introduce to the store. We have gradually done this purely by self-control & not BUYING ALL THE THINGS at once (trade fairs are hard!). We pride ourselves on returning customers and have a fantastic loyal base locally. We strive daily to increase and widen this market especially online where shopping can feel impersonal & distant.

(PD) What is the happiest moment you have had since you launched?
(K&E) Doubling our turnover!  Our inspiring accountant set us goals (of which we first laughed aloud to) and we have now found ourselves smashing them. It’s a lot of early mornings and late nights and not all fun, but at the end of each month seeing our constant financial growth keeps us inspired to work smarter and harder. Doubling our turn over has also allowed us to take on two employee’s allowing us some flexibility.

(PD) What is your most beloved product you have created?
(K&E) We both have different tastes and couldn’t choose just one product. We pride ourselves on stocking unique items that you can’t find just anywhere. Plus we have the added bonus of handmaking our jewelry, cards, book clocks, record clocks & custom made blocks. So these things are forever changing.

If I have to choose, I [Kirsty] am a sucker for the Salus Body Range & Damselfly Candles. Emma loves the Oven Mitts & Tote Bags. But honestly, this is like asking a parent to choose a favorite child.

(PD) Do you have any advice for someone starting their own brand in your niche?
(K&E) Get the right advice first – no matter what you are attempting. Whether it is from a financial, legal, or logistical point of view. Getting correct information from the very beginning can save you a heap of time, money, and over thinking at 2am. And notebooks!!! We have about 15 notebooks with notes & lists scribbled in them – write EVERYTHING down! Having these things on paper helps you manifest & bring goals into fruition.

Thank you so much Kirsty and Emma for allowing me to share your spunk and creativity with all Picking Daisies readers. You two are truly an inspiration for others to take the plunge and create the life of their dreams.
