Lake Geneva, often called the Hamptons of the Midwest, has a rich history of being a summer retreat for Chicagoโs elite. Notable families like the Wrigleys and Hugh Hefner found solace here, escaping the city heat. Interestingly, the town even served as a backdrop for “Cheaper by the Dozen 2”! This charming lake town offers the perfect blend of relaxation, history, and fun for families and couples alike.
The only place we stay in Lake Geneva is The Grand Geneva Resort and Spa. Imagine a cruise on land โ thatโs how Iโd describe this resort. Originally built as the Lake Geneva Playboy Club Hotel by Hugh Hefner in 1968, this resort has transformed into the perfect getaway retreat. With amenities like a golf course, waterpark, spa, and multiple dining options, thereโs truly no need to leave the property to have an amazing time.
After settling in, we headed to the Beauty Belle Lake Geneva for a lunch cruise. This cruise is a fun way to kickstart your visit, with great food and drinks while learning the history of the lakeside mansions. Our 4 year old had fun and enjoyed the 2 hour cruise!
Post-cruise, I slipped away to indulge in a massage and pedicure at the Grand Geneva’s spa. Let me tell you, it was heavenly. The spaโs serene ambiance and skilled staff made for a five-star experience. Meanwhile, Chad and Addy had a blast lounging by the outdoor pool, complete with a bar and tasty bites. Addy loved the poolside fun while Chad and I appreciated the chance to unwind.
We reconnected for dinner at The Chophouse, known for its mouth-watering steaks and seafood. If you plan to dine here, make reservations when you book your hotel as it fills up quickly. And for good reason, the Oyster Rockefellers are a must-try โ the best Iโve ever had! The ambiance is sophisticated yet comfortable, perfect for a relaxing evening.
After dinner, you can either unwind at the lobby bar or enjoy the incredible views from your balcony. Sipping a drink while taking in the serene landscape is a perfect way to end the day.
We started our day with breakfast at Grand Cafรฉ. The variety is impressive, and their corned beef hash is so good it sold out on our second day! Plus, the prices are very reasonable, which was a pleasant surprise for a resort. The cafรฉ’s cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made our mornings delightful.
Next, we visited the stables on the property. Addy was excited to feed the horses and donkeys, and even got to ride a pony. For older kids and adults, thereโs horseback riding along scenic trails โ something weโre saving for our next visit. The stables are well-maintained, and the staff are knowledgeable and friendly, making it a fun and educational experience for the whole family.
One of the highlights of our trip was the Safari Zoo, a drive-thru zoo where you can feed giraffes and llamas from your car. Make sure to book your reservations in advance. Itโs a unique and fun experience for the whole family. The excitement of getting up close to these exotic animals is unparalleled, and it’s an adventure you wonโt want to miss.
In the afternoon, we drove about 20 minutes to a charming winery situated on a quaint farm. We enjoyed a relaxed atmosphere, played cornhole, and savored some great wine. The winery’s rustic charm and friendly staff made it a perfect place to unwind and enjoy some quality family time.
We returned to Lake Geneva for dinner at The Baker House. This historic mansion-turned-restaurant offers not only incerdible food but also a glimpse into the townโs rich history. Dining here is a step back in time. The house, with its vintage decor and historical artifacts, provides a unique dining experience that transports you to a different era.
Our final day started with another hearty breakfast at Grand Geneva. The breakfast spread is extensive, catering to all tastes and preferences. Itโs the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring.
We spent the morning exploring downtown Lake Geneva. There are plenty of shops, cafes, and activities to enjoy. One fun activity to consider is renting a paddleboat or bike to explore the area further. The downtown area is charming, with its quaint shops and friendly locals, offering a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.
For our last meal, we dined at the Italian restaurant within Grand Geneva. The pasta was divine, and the ambiance made it a perfect spot for a farewell dinner.
As our trip came to an end, we couldnโt help but reflect on how much fun we had. The Grand Geneva Resort proved to be the perfect home base, offering comfort, convenience, and a touch of luxury. Lake Geneva truly offers something for everyone. Whether youโre looking to relax, explore, or enjoy new experiences, this charming town is the ideal destination.
