#MTHFR has really shaped the way I live my life as well as help me make decisions on the products we buy. Recently, we found out my husband has MTHFR and now we know for a fact Addyson will have either one or both mutations.Â
It’s not the end of the world but it does call for making some serious changes. One of the biggest changes we have made is getting rid of all plastic dinnerware. What shocked me when shopping for babies, is how EVERYTHING is made out of plastic. Forks, bottles, plates, the list goes on. It confuses me just as much as why they would put fragrance in newborn laundry detergent.Â
When will we learn that household chemicals are to blame for most cancers and that we could literally heal our bodies and live a longer, healthier life when we start to eliminate toxins?
With MTHFR, your body lacks the ability to detox properly. So instead it stores the toxins from your food, dinnerware, skin care products, make-up, etc in your bloodstream. This build up then causes various illnesses such as cancers, Alzheimer’s disease, and mental illness.Â
I am not perfect when it comes to avoiding plastic or eliminating toxins, but I make a HUGE conscious effort. And just because I slip up at times, doesn’t mean Addyson has to. That’s why we said GOOD-BYE, SEE YOU NEVER to plastic bottles and dinnerware. There are SO many glass bottles on the market nowadays but with us planning to breastfeed, we weren’t too worried about bottles.
What I was having a hard time finding was non-plastic dinnerware for babies. One quick search on Buy Buy Baby literally ALL YOU SEE is silicone and plastic. Even the bamboo plates and silverware has plastic tops.Â
WHY IS PLASTIC HARMFUL?
Plastic is made with BPA: Bisphenol A. BPA is a material used in hard, lightweight plastics called polycarbonates (source:WebMD) . BPA transfers from the plastic into your food and water which then gets transferred into our bloodstream. Regular monitoring by the CDC shows that more than 90% of us have detectable levels of bisphenol A in our bodies. One large, well-conducted study in humans showed that people who had high levels of BPA in the urine had a higher rate of diabetes, heart disease, and liver toxicity. (source: WebMD).
BPA and polycarbonates disrupt our hormones causing reproductive issues, mental illness, and again- a build up of toxins in our bloodstream, which causes a million more serious issues.Â
One of the most important studies on BPA was a Rhesus Monkey study (Patricia Hunt, University of Washington). We share 95% of our DNA with Rhesus monkeys so when they are shown to have genetic damage from BPA, we can be pretty sure the same thing is happening to us. The study provides the strongest evidence yet that estrogen-like chemicals like BPA alter chromosomes, increasing the risk of birth defects and miscarriages. The study used levels of BPA similar to those to which humans are exposed through our food and drink and many consumer products including receipts. The study showed that cellular damage can hit three generations at once. BPA can affect a pregnant mother, her unborn fetus, and if that fetus is female, that fetus’s future offspring. WHAT TO USE INSTEAD OF PLASTICWARE FOR BABIES
After searching high and low (and every bit in between) I finally came across Kiddobloom . According to their website, Kiddobloom uses pure stainless steel as raw materials because they want to help us minimize our plastic footprints. In addition, some plastic materials are toxic for food contact applications. Kiddobloom chooses high-grade stainless steel #304 because they want their products to be more rust-resistant compared to other lower quality materials under normal usage and care.
All of Kiddobloom’s products are lab-tested to ensure they are non-toxic and can withstand bumps and drops in normal everyday usage. The products are made to certainly outlast plastic and bamboo. Not only that, but all of their sets come with a lifetime warranty.
After doing more research (researching never ends for first-time moms does it?), I also found out Kiddobloom is a gold winner of the prestigious Mom’s Choice Award. The Mom’s Choice Awards (MCA) evaluates products and services created for parents and educators and is globally recognized for establishing the benchmark of excellence in family-friendly media, products, and services. Using a rigorous evaluation process, entries are scored on a number of elements including production quality, design, educational value, entertainment value, originality, appeal, and cost. Around the world, parents, educators, retailers and members of the media trust the MCA Honoring Excellence seal when selecting quality products and services for families and children.
All of this sold me that this was the perfect product for us. You can never have too many sets and in my case, be too prepared, so I added one of every design onto my baby registry. When the time comes for her to eat solid food, I want to be stocked up!Â
