When we moved from California to Indiana in 2023, we found a great house in a neighborhood we love, with an amazing school district. The house was barely lived in and we were so excited to start our life in Indiana! (Fun fact: an NFL player for the Colts actually lived here first!)
But once we moved in, one thing became very clear.
Everything was white.

Yes this is beautiful, but it made me feel like I was in an insane asylum. WHITE EVERYTHING.
Walls, cabinets, countertops, trim. All white. The previous owners were only here for about a year and didn’t make many changes, which meant we were starting with a completely blank slate. While white kitchens are beautiful, mine and my husband’s style leans much more antique store, haunted grandma’s house. We love color, character, and charm. This isn’t our forever home, but we’ll be here for a good number of years, and I wasn’t willing to live with a kitchen that didn’t feel like us.
The first year, we tackled the backsplash, which helped a bit, but the cabinets were still bright white and honestly the thing holding the whole kitchen back. We knew cabinets would be the biggest transformation, but we were hesitant.
We lived through a full kitchen remodel in our old house and it was brutal. Overspray fumes so strong we couldn’t be inside, sanding dust everywhere, weeks without a usable kitchen, and a price tag that still makes me cringe. Even painting cabinets came with quotes that were shockingly high for something that chips and peels over time.
We didn’t want to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a kitchen remodel for a house that isn’t our forever home. But we did want something we loved.
That’s when we started looking into how to upgrade our kitchen without remodeling.
After nearly two years of collecting quotes from painters and full remodel companies, we landed on Kitchen Refresh, and it immediately felt like the right solution.
Kitchen Refresh specializes in upgrading kitchens without remodeling by replacing cabinet doors and drawer fronts while professionally finishing the existing cabinet boxes. No demolition. No tearing out cabinets. No construction chaos.
What sold us:
A fraction of the cost of a full kitchen remodel
A finish designed to last longer than traditional cabinet paint
No chipping, peeling, or constant touch-ups
A process that takes days, not weeks or months
After living through one full renovation already, keeping our sanity mattered just as much as saving money.

Now just picture a beautiful butcher block countertop..Chef’s kiss!
We chose a rich, moody green for our cabinets, and somehow it perfectly matched the walls I had already painted before this project even started. One of those meant-to-be design moments. We kept our original antique gold hardware, which ended up being one of my favorite decisions. Against the green, it finally felt intentional and like a true statement instead of an afterthought.
The process itself was almost eerie in how easy it was.
Day one was painting the existing cabinet boxes.
Day two was installing brand new cabinet doors and drawer fronts.
That’s it.
No cabinet clean-outs. No kitchen shutdown. We were still making coffee in the morning and cooking dinner at night while everything was happening. Coming from someone who has lived through weeks of kitchen dust and chaos, this felt unreal.
In just two days, our kitchen went from bright white builder-grade to a space full of depth, warmth, and character.

We turned the cabinet near the stove into a trashcan, GAME CHANGER!
One of the biggest misconceptions about kitchen upgrades is that the only way to get a dramatic transformation is through a full remodel. That simply isn’t true.
Replacing cabinet doors instead of tearing everything out gives you the biggest visual impact for a fraction of the cost. And because Kitchen Refresh uses durable materials designed to outlast traditional paint, this wasn’t a short-term fix. No chips, no peeling, just a kitchen that will look exactly the same years from now as it does today.
Two and a half years later, every white wall in this house is finally gone (except the ceilings… ugh, next project), and this home is finally starting to feel like us.
If you’re dreaming of a kitchen makeover but don’t want the stress, cost, or disruption of a full remodel, upgrading your cabinets without remodeling might be the solution you didn’t know existed. Head to the Kitchen Refresh website to find a refresh in your area and see what’s possible for your own kitchen.
